Renting an apartment for the first time comes with a whole new set of territory. Certain factors can be overwhelming if you don’t know where to start. Listed below are four things that are important to keep in mind when making this transition.
1)Be ready to provide the necessary information. In order to be proven a worthy candidate apartment applications ask that you provide more than just your rental history. It’s important that you can provide proof of income, this can be done with your last three pay check stubs and/or bank statements. An up to date form of ID such as a driver’s license or passport is also required as well as your social security number. The latter is so that the property manager can perform a background check.
2) Read over your lease agreement. Essentially your lease is a contract between you and the property manager. The terms of the lease are legally binding so it’s important to understand what you’re signing and to also keep a copy for your own records. Make sure you know how long the terms of the contact are in place for. Some places rent month to month, others require the minimum of a six month lease and some places automatically renew the terms of the contract annually.
3) Always purchase renters insurance. Some apartment complexes require that you purchase renters insurance. If not, it’s still an important investment to make. Renters insurance is for your protection in the case of any natural disasters, injury or theft etc. Depending on your policy you can get covered for the basics or for more advanced coverage.
4) Complete the inspection checklist. When moving into your apartment for the first time you will be presented with an inspection checklist. This is so that you will not be held accountable for any damage from previous tenants. Make sure you are thorough in your inspection and check for out of the ordinary wear and tear such as mold, clogged pipes and faulty appliances etc. Once completed make sure that the property manager receives and signs the list. It also couldn’t hurt to keep a copy for your own records as well.
